Traveling
through Namibia
|
Driving
a car in Namibia is easy because there is no congestion.
The traffic is British-style, driving on the left; therefore,
all vehicles are right-steering which one can easily become
familiar. The main routes of Namibia are in first-class
condition, the other roads are metal or sand roads of different
qualities.
|
On
almost all roads of Namibia you can drive with normal vehicles.
4X4 drive is necessary only on a few roads. However, we recommend
4X4 jeeps because they are not only better to manage in heavy
road conditions; in addition they offer also better stability,
more elevation from the ground, and bigger tires with a stronger
profile; all these attributes could be very useable on small and
bad roads. Finally, 4X4s are raised and you have a better overview
which is an advantage by "game watching".
If you want to explore Namibia on your own; if you want to be
in complete control of where you stay, then you need a rental
car with fully equipped camping supplies. For comfortable night
sleeping, you can rent an Eskimo tent or a roof tent on
top of the vehicle. The roof tent is an easily erected and simply
dismantled outdoor sleeping alternative, and the sleeper is far
away enough from ground living insects and other bugs.
 |
Namibia's
natural environment is most enjoyable by outback camping
in this wilderness of Africa. Within a range of 130 miles
up to 200 miles, you can experience complete solitude in
the natural bush. You literally hear nothing but the surrounding
silence, you can enjoy over and over the marvelous sunrise,
and you will be overwhelmed by the view of the stars in
the southern sky, especially the Southern Cross.

General
renting conditions
The
person who signs the contract has to present a valid passport.
The renter or driver must be at least 21 years old. If their driving
license is less than 2 years old, an additional rate of N$ 500.-
will be due in the case of an accident. All damages on tires and
windshields have to be fixed by the renter. Renter is responsible
for all fuel costs.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Loss Waiver (TLW) are
obligating and are included in the price. Coverage for damages
on material, persons, and assets are not included. We offer you
an Additional Damage Waiver (AEDW) for reducing the deposit. The
new deposit will be due in advance for covering of possible damages
(credit card). Although the renter is covered by CDW, TLW and
AEDW he is still responsible for the entire damage if the accident
was caused by
- lack of attention / culpable negligence
- driving through restricted areas
- passing of country borders without permission (means: without
appropriate visa etc.).
In case of an accident caused by the rental party, the renter
will be responsible for towing costs and for costs of a replaced
vehicle.
Extensions of the rental period has to be adjusted with the renter
at least 2 days (48 hours) before expiration of the contract.
Shortening of the rental period must be adjusted with the renter
at least 2 days (48 hours) before expiration of the contract.
It will be up to us to charge cancellation fees.
If at the time of your check in the reserved vehicle is not available,
we reserve the right to substitute another comparable vehicle.
All vehicles will be rented according to the conditions of our
rental contract. Prices are subject of change until the contract
is signed by both owner and renter.
Med-Rescue offers to our customers a medical rescue by plane/helicopter
in case of a car accident. They transport you to the very best
medical facilities in the country (look at the price table). An
additional insurance for air rescue in cases of sickness
is locally available.
Cancellation fees: up to 45 days prior to check in you
will be charged 20% of the price; 44 to 22 days before check in
you will be charged 50% of the price; 21 to 8 days before check
in you will be charged 75% of the price; from 7 days prior
to the check in you will be charged 90% of the price. We
recommend the purchase of a cancellation insurance (described
above).
Payment conditions: 20% down payment in USD by confirmation
of the reservation. We will recommend the most convenient payment
plan for the balance. Master Card and Visa Card are welcome, especially
for the deposit. Full payment has to be paid by check in. A rebate
is negotiable by paying in cash or with travelers checks.
Driving the vehicle outside of the borders of Namibia requires
permits to be supplied by the renter. You are staying in Namibia
under the laws of Namibia. Location of the court is Windhoek /
Namibia.
Explanations:
CDW: Collision Damage Waiver=Insurance in case of a collision
TLW: Theft Loss Waiver=Insurance in case of theft or fire
(loss)
Excess: Deposit in amount of the deduction; this is the
maximum amount which the renter has to pay in case of damage.
Smaller damages will result in a reduced deduction.
Example: Should you suffer a collision with an animal and the
front bumper and the fender are damaged, the damage costs are
N$ 1,250.-; therefore, the renter has to pay the full amount because
the costs are less than the deduction. If the costs would be beyond
the deduction the additional insurance would cover the costs and
the renter would lose his deposit.
Reduced Excess: The deposit can be reduced by 50% with
the additional insurance AEDW.

Safety
hints for driving on rough roads (metal road)
The
traffic is British-style, driving on the left; therefore, all
vehicles are right-steering.
The majority of accidents on rough roads are caused by excessive
speed. Therefore, you should not exceed the speed limit of 50
- 56 mi/h (80 – 90 km/h). Pay attention to traffic signs, especially
to those which alert to curves. Here you should reduce your speed
significantly. Unless it is unavoidable, you should not drive
at night in unfamiliar territory with uncertain migratory patterns
of game. On dusty roads you should turn on your headlights for
better visibility. When passing oncoming traffic, you should reduce
your speed significantly and stay on the left side as far as possible.
Rain causes the roads to be very slippery. Be alert for submerged
or flooded roads. You should pass a river bed only in areas where
you can cross by feet. Always observe for animals which could
cross the road suddenly. You should always drive the car with
both hands holding the steering wheel. Rough roads are not all
the same. Please adjust your driving style according to the current
road condition.
The air pressure of the tires is very important for the driving
stability. You should follow the manufacturer's instructions and
check the pressure properly.
